self-helpIn this day and age of self improvement, there are many different ways to change your thinking and maintain a healthy lifestyle. With so many different offerings available to you, it is often confusing trying to find the right one. While many say that one particular thing works over another, it is really up to you to decide the right one for you. Here are some of the many different opportunities available, as well as a brief description of what they are all about.

One of the more popular self help methods is hypnotherapy. This is commonly thought of as a form of entertainment. You may have seen hypnotists making people do things that normally they may never do. In reality, they may have hidden desires that may only come out when hypnotizes. Other people see hypnotherapy and relate it too dark offices, reliving repressed memories and the like.

Realistically, hypnotherapy can be used in a wide array of applications. It is a state of heightened awareness, and suggestions made in this trance like state can be worked into the subconscious and integrated into the mind. It has successfully helped many people quit smoking, loose weight, and a great many other bad habits. It can help with pain management, and to alleviate stress, just to name a few.

While hypnotherapy is seeking change with the help of outside sources, meditation is about working on improvement from within yourself. You may associate meditation with people sitting in a room, saying mantras or being spiritually guided by a guru. While in some cases this is true, there are many techniques that can be done on your own. Meditation has been used for thousands of years, for relaxation, enlightenment, etc., but more and more people are turning to meditation to help themselves improve both spiritually and physically. It can relieve stress, manage pain, and change old habits.

Neuro-linguistic programming may make you think of mind control, and that is exactly how it works. Not mind control really, but changing your association with things from one view to another. You see it many times in advertising, and in other areas. A good example of Neuro-linguistic programming we see in advertising is beer commercials. Alcohol companies often use scantily clad women, exotic ports, or what ever to help sell there products. You keep seeing these commercials for brand ‘X’ and you begin to see yourself drinking this beer and having sexy women by your side. So now every time you see brand ‘X,’ in the store, on television, etc., you associate it with sexiness.

What Neuro-linguistic programming does is reprogram your thoughts and associations with things. It is a great tool for businesses, because it can greatly help people who are uncomfortable with say, public speaking. Finding the underlying cause of the fear, how outside stimuli triggers responses, and how to change mental associations to improve abilities are all what these techniques are about.

These are just a few of the many different techniques and methods of self help. If you are looking to improve your public or private relationships, manage pain, homeopathic healing, or break old habits, develop some new ones; there is no shortage of methods to be found. There are many websites to steer you in the right direction and many professionals in the health care and business industries use many of them regularly.

One thing that you must understand when using any self help method, is that no one technique works better than another; they all have their pros and cons. You have to find the one, or combination that works the best for you. Another thing that most people don’t realize, and is often the common reason techniques fail is it is not a quick fix. While some things may change immediately, many take time to see results. Those people who try a variety of different things, use them only once or twice, complain that it didn’t work before they gave it a chance.

Which ever technique you try, keep at it for awhile, then decide if it works or not. As I said before, while one may not work entirely for your needs, you may find that a combination of things will work for you. You didn’t pick up habits overnight; you can’t expect to change your thoughts and actions like that either. Pain management doesn’t always happen right away, but you will find that if you stick with something, you will begin to see results.
