Allow Your Ego to Discover Your True Self

The ego according to dictionary.com is “the “I” or self of any person; a person as thinking, feeling, and willing, and distinguishing itself from the selves of others and from objects of its thought.” It is what makes us separate from others and is who we are? Do you agree with that definition? Some define ego as self worth, and sometimes conceit. Perhaps the problem is less with the way we define ego and more with the way we define relationship between the universe and our ego.

Where does the ego begin? When we are children, we become aware that we need adults to support us materially and emotionally or else we die, as children we do whatever adults expect us to do, including denying our true selves and pretending to be the ideal selves that our society reinforces. Looking back on my life, I have become aware that my ego was certainly not the who of my life but the what of it: what others felt about me, what I had, and what I could achieve. As teen’s the ego becomes the entire focus as the primary focus becomes being accepted by their peers. Today’s high school students are acutely aware of the harmfulness of disrespect and dismissal, which they call dissing. As we continue into the world of commerce and choose a career we become whatever the choice we made. A carpenter, a lawyer, a mother and we behave in the way that we believe these “people” behave. Our focus continues to be on the external person and how we appear to others. Do we drive the right car? Do we belong to the right club or church?

Sometimes at some point in our lives we stop and ask “Is this all there is?” Can I ever become the person I think I’m supposed to be to be accepted by my peers? Sometimes at some point in our lives we stop caring what others think of us and begin to care what we think of ourselves. This is when the magic begins. The moment you realize that you are connected, joined and unified with all people, love and forgive all people, you return to the awareness that you live in light. I believe our Ego is what stands between the animal and the saint, it is indeed a big breach, that needs to dissipate to centralize our very nature, it is like a shell, a hard shell we create to be "appropriate" to society, that is how society controls us, no one can control a free-spirit, (without the shell).

How do we rediscover our true self? How do we become the person we were meant to become? There is within each of us a wondrous guidance system. Some call it our conscience, our gut, the inner voice, the small voice within; you know what I’m talking about you’ve experienced it over and over again. It is the guidance system that is telling you what you’re supposed to do in any given instance. This guidance system is always right it is always making the correct choice for you. Whenever you receive this “feeling”, if it is a message to not do something, DON’T DO IT. If it is a positive feeling DO IT. The feeling will not be the same for everyone given the same circumstances because each of us is different. Sit down with yourself tonight at your mirror and have a discussion with yourself. No, I’m not kidding. Commit to yourself that you will follow your internal guidance system and become your true self.
